Delegation from Tanzania visits Freiberg

9th May 2014, Freiberg (Germany)

The project "Preparation of a Geoscientific Data Information Management System", which was awarded to Beak Consultants GmbH by the Ministry of Energy and Minerals of Tanzania in April 2013, is nearly completed. Currently, a delegation from the Geological Survey and the Ministry of Energy and Minerals of Tanzania is visiting Germany. Part of the project is the first time compilation of a metallogenetic map for this East African country with a surface area of approximately 900,000 square kilometres. The map summarizes the known knowledge of the metallic and non-metallic mineral deposits and occurrences of the country being the basis for the search for new deposits. It creates an important basis for investment into the mining sector and is thus a prerequisite for the targeted development of the country.

The visit also includes meetings with potential partners, public administration, science and industry, such as the Saxon State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Energy and Labour, the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources, the Saxon State Office for Environment, Agriculture and Geology, and the Technical University of Freiberg. In the open pit mine Welzow-South and in the visitor mine Zinnkammern Pöhla, the guests were informed about modern lignite mining and the possible revival of the Saxon ore mining on the deposit Hämmerlein-Tellerhäuser.

The project, financed by the World Bank, will be completed in June 2014.
