Continuation of Uganda project in 2012

06th January 2012, Uganda

Beak Consultants GmbH is continuing the work for the Department of Geological Survey and Mines (DGSM) in Entebbe/Uganda. After the closure of the world bank funded project „Establishment of a Modern Documentation Centre“ (31 December 2011), the DGSM has announced further financing by the Nordic Development Fund. Thus, in the first half of 2012, the following software will be introduced by Beak into the daily working procedures:

  • the Unpublished Documents Information System UDIS (a database application especially developed by Beak according to the requirements of the DGSM),
  • ERMS – an electronic records management system for the flow and tracing of all internal and external documents at the Geological Survey.
In addition, training on the job will be held, e.g. to maintain and update of the website www.uganda-mining.go.ug/webudis, which was developed and programmed by Beak. This portal allows to query and download scanned geological reports (depending on user rights). Currently, four Beak staff are on-site.

Since 2008, for more than 30,000 published and unpublished documents meta data have been captured and more than 6.000 PDF files with scans of geological reports have been incorporated into the UDIS database. In addition, the professional library system LIBERO by LIB-IT is currently introduced for management of the published literature.

For marketing of the modern documentation centre, DGSM and Beak participated in the major mining exhibitions such as MINING INDABA (Cape Town), Mines & Money (London) and PDAC (Toronto). The final workshop is intended for September  2012 in Entebbe.
